Think Tank: Trafalgar Analytics associate publishes short history of Anglofuturism in The Critic
THE CRITIC, 10th August 2026 — Martin Beaver, Associate at Trafalgar Analytics, has today published a short history of Anglofuturism in The Critic, tracing the discourse's journey from an obscure 2021 Twitter neologism rooted in "Progressive Nationalism" to a mainstream, cross-party growth brand now claimed by figures from Robert Jenrick to former Guardian journalist Shiv Malik.
The essay charts Anglofuturism's origins among Anglo anon accounts and commentators such as Alice Earendel, P.A., Drukpa Kunley and Brewgaloo, its 2022 popularisation via Aris Roussinos' UnHerd manifesto, and its subsequent dilution as groups like Looking for Growth absorbed the term into a broader, immigration-agnostic 'British Growth Movement'. This dilution provoked independent journalist Jack Hadfield's late-2025 critique that "Anglofuturism without mass deportations completely misses the point". Today, Anglofuturism is championed by figures such as Lawrence Newport and, more controversially, American-born journalist Shiv Malik, whose 'Forest City' proposal remains a lightning rod.
"Anglofuturism represented an expression of right wing politics, free from the baggage, underwhelming ideas, and stuffiness of Tory conservatism," wrote Martin Beaver, Associate (Elections and Polling) at Trafalgar Analytics. "Today, whilst we should not throw out Anglofuturism in totality, we must not be retconned by the mainstream discourse into thinking of Anglofuturism without the Anglo- or the Futurism."
